Choosing a Breast Implant: Size, Shape and Projection
19 July 2026Liposuction is a body-contouring method in which localised fat deposits that persist despite diet and exercise are removed from the body using special cannulas. Although the two are often confused, liposuction is not a weight-loss method; its aim is not to reduce total body weight but to bring disproportionate areas into better harmony with the rest of the body. For this reason, the answer to “who is it suitable for?” depends less on a person’s weight and more on the distribution of fat and the quality of the skin.
Who Is Liposuction Suitable For?
Liposuction is generally preferred for people with the following characteristics:
- Those who are close to their ideal weight but have stubborn fat in specific areas (abdomen, waist, hips, back, inner arms, inner knees, double chin),
- Those with good skin elasticity, meaning the skin has the potential to retract after fat is removed,
- Individuals in suitable general health with realistic expectations.
When skin elasticity is poor or there is significant excess skin, liposuction alone may not be sufficient; in such cases an assessment together with lifting procedures may be required.
Localised Fat and Body Mass Index (BMI)
Body mass index (BMI) is a general measure of weight relative to height. BMI alone is not decisive when planning liposuction; however, at very high BMI values both the safety and the aesthetic outcome of the procedure can be affected. Liposuction is therefore generally a more suitable option for people whose weight is under control and who are troubled only by localised fat. For those who are overweight, the priority is usually weight control through healthy lifestyle changes; localised contouring comes into consideration after this stage.
What Is Assessed During Evaluation?
During the examination, the area and amount of fat accumulation, skin elasticity, any previous surgeries and the person’s general health are assessed together. The technique to be used, the amount of fat to be removed and any accompanying procedures are then planned individually based on this evaluation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will I lose weight permanently with liposuction?
Liposuction is not a weight-loss method. The removed fat cells do not return, but if a balanced diet and regular activity are not maintained, the remaining cells can grow and affect the appearance. Maintaining the result depends on lifestyle.
Is there an upper limit to the fat removed?
For safety, there are certain limits to the amount of fat that can be removed in a single session; this amount is determined by the physician according to the person’s health and body measurements.
When can I return to daily life after the procedure?
Most patients can return to their daily activities within a few days; however, recovery time varies according to the treated area and the individual. Wearing a compression garment and following the doctor’s schedule are important during this process.
