Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery Glossary

Informational explanations of terms frequently used in aesthetic, plastic and reconstructive surgery. The definitions here are general information; the method suitable for you and the expected outcome can only be determined after a medical examination.

Rhinoplasty

Surgical reshaping of the bone and cartilage structure of the nose. It may be performed for the appearance of the nose and also for breathing function.

Piezo

A surgical device that cuts bone with ultrasonic sound waves. Because it acts only on bone tissue, the surrounding soft tissue is preserved.

Revision rhinoplasty

A corrective operation for people who have had previous nose surgery when the desired aesthetic or breathing outcome has not been achieved.

Septal deviation

A crooked partition inside the nose. It can make breathing difficult and may be addressed in the same session as rhinoplasty.

Nasal concha (turbinate)

Mucosal structures inside the nose that humidify and warm the air. When enlarged they can narrow the airway.

Mastopexy

Breast lift surgery. It aims to bring sagging breast tissue to a higher and more compact position.

Dual plane

A technique in which the breast implant is placed partly under the muscle and partly under the breast tissue, aiming for a more natural appearance.

SMAS

The layer of muscle and connective tissue beneath the skin of the face. Repositioning this layer in a facelift affects how long the result lasts.

Temporal lift

A procedure in which the tissues of the temple area are suspended upwards, lifting the outer brow and periorbital area. Also known as fox eyes.

Blepharoplasty

Eyelid surgery. It involves adjusting excess skin and fat tissue in the upper or lower eyelid.

Liposuction

Removal of localised fat deposits that persist despite diet and exercise, using special cannulas. It is a body contouring procedure, not a weight-loss method.

BBL (Brazilian Butt Lift)

A body contouring procedure in which the person own fat is harvested by liposuction and transferred to the buttock area.

Gynecomastia

Enlargement of breast tissue in men. It can be corrected with liposuction and/or removal of the breast tissue.

Abdominoplasty

Tummy tuck surgery. It involves removing excess skin and fat tissue in the abdominal area and tightening loosened abdominal muscles.

Brachioplasty

Arm lift surgery. Sagging skin and fat tissue in the upper arm are removed to achieve a firmer appearance.

Mommy Makeover

A personalised approach in which the changes that occur in the body after childbirth are planned together, and which may include tummy tuck, breast aesthetics and liposuction.

Mesotherapy

Injection of mixtures containing vitamins, minerals, amino acids and hyaluronic acid under the skin in small doses.

Hyaluronic acid filler

The most commonly used filler material, applied to restore volume loss, define facial contours and fill in wrinkles.

Botulinum toxin

An application that reduces the appearance of wrinkles by temporarily limiting muscle contraction. The effect usually lasts 3-6 months.

Written and verbal explanation to the patient of the method to be used, the type of anaesthesia, the healing process and the possible risks. It is a legal requirement.
