Facial Fat Transfer: Restoring Volume With Your Own Tissue
26 September 2026Two of the most common questions from people considering a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) are where the scar will be and how the navel will look. Because a tummy tuck involves removing excess skin and fat and often tightening the abdominal muscles, it inevitably leaves a scar. In this article we explain scar placement and how the navel is handled in general terms.
Where is the scar placed?
In a full tummy tuck the incision is usually planned along a line in the lower abdomen, just above the pubic area, extending from hip to hip. The aim is for the scar to sit where underwear or swimwear can cover it. The length depends on the amount of excess skin to be removed; more excess skin usually requires a longer incision. Planning is done at the consultation with markings made while standing, taking the patient’s preferred clothing styles into account.
How does a mini tummy tuck differ?
For some people whose excess skin is limited to below the navel, a “mini” tummy tuck with a shorter incision may be considered. In this approach the navel is usually left untouched. However, if there is also laxity above the navel, the mini approach may not be enough; which option is suitable is decided at the consultation.
How is the navel reshaped?
In a full tummy tuck the navel is not detached; the skin around it is freed, and after the abdominal skin is pulled down, a new opening is created through which the navel is brought out and reshaped. The aim is a natural-looking, proportionate navel with an inconspicuous scar. The scar around the navel may become less noticeable over time, although this varies from person to person.
How does the scar develop?
Scars may be reddish and slightly raised in the first months and usually fade and soften within 12–18 months. Scar development depends on skin type, genetics, tension in the area and aftercare. Following the scar care your surgeon recommends, protecting the scar from the sun and not smoking are general recommendations that support healing. Scars that thicken noticeably or itch are assessed at follow-up.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the tummy tuck scar disappear completely?
No, surgical scars do not disappear completely, but they usually fade and become less noticeable over time. The aim is to place the scar where it can be hidden as much as possible.
Will the scar show in a swimsuit?
The scar is usually planned so that underwear or swimwear can cover it. Telling your surgeon which styles you prefer helps with planning.
What if I already have a caesarean scar?
A caesarean scar is often close to where the tummy tuck incision lies and is taken into account in planning; in some cases it may fall within the skin that is removed.
