Open vs Closed Rhinoplasty: What Is the Difference and How Is It Chosen?
25 September 2026After rhinoplasty (nose surgery), one of the things patients ask about most is the splint placed on the nose. It is the most visible part of the first days, and the day it comes off often feels like an important milestone. In this article we explain in general terms what the splint does, what to keep in mind while wearing it, and what is usually seen when it is removed. Internal packing is a separate topic, covered in our article on nasal packing.
Why is a splint used?
During surgery the nasal bones and cartilage are reshaped. In the first days the tissues are sensitive to both swelling and outside pressure. An external splint on the nasal bridge (made of thermoplastic, aluminium or similar material) helps keep the structures in place, limits how swelling spreads and protects the nose against small accidental bumps. In some operations thin silicone internal splints may also be placed inside the nose around the septum; whether these are used depends on the procedure and is decided by the surgeon.
What to keep in mind while wearing the splint
- Keep it dry: moisture can loosen the tapes under the splint. Protect the nose when washing your face and avoid long exposure to steam in the shower.
- Sleep with your head raised: keeping the head slightly elevated on one or two pillows in the first days may help swelling settle.
- Leave it alone: do not try to remove or re-stick a splint whose edges lift or itch.
- Avoid glasses: glasses should not rest on the nasal bridge during and after the splint period; see our article on wearing glasses for details.
The skin under the splint may become oily and small spots can appear. This is usually temporary and settles with the gentle skin care your surgeon recommends once the splint is off.
When does the splint come off, and what does it feel like?
The splint is generally removed about one week after surgery at a follow-up visit, although the timing varies from person to person depending on the procedure, the tissues and the surgeon’s assessment. Removal is usually quick; because the tapes are softened first, significant pain is not expected, though a mild pulling sensation is possible.
The nose you see when the splint comes off is not the final result. Swelling continues on the bridge and especially at the tip, the tip may feel firm or numb, and some discoloration under the eyes may remain. Feeling anxious about this first look is understandable, but swelling resolves gradually over months, and the timeline differs for each person.
The first weeks after the splint
Some patients may be advised to continue taping for a short time after the splint is removed. General recommendations include avoiding pressure on the nose, staying away from contact sports and protecting the face from the sun. Nasal cleaning, moisturising and the timing of follow-up visits are planned individually. If you notice unexpectedly increasing pain, redness, fever or a sudden change in the shape of the nose, contact your surgeon without delay.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the splint stay on?
Usually about one week, but the exact duration is set by your surgeon according to the procedure and how healing progresses.
What should I do if the splint loosens or falls off?
Do not try to reattach it yourself, avoid pressing on the nose and inform your surgeon as soon as possible; a check-up will be arranged if needed.
Why does my nose look swollen and firm after the splint is removed?
This is a normal part of healing. Swelling lasts longer at the tip and decreases gradually over months; the duration depends on skin type and the procedure performed.
