What Is Diastasis Recti (Abdominal Muscle Separation)?
26 September 2026In the first weeks after liposuction it is common to notice swelling, firmness and a wavy look to the skin in the treated area. Much of this is a normal part of healing and fades over time. In this article we explain in general terms how tissue settles after liposuction and when you should contact your surgeon.
What is normal in the first weeks?
- Swelling (oedema): fluid collects in the treated area; swelling is marked in the first weeks and decreases over months.
- Firmness and lumpiness: firm areas may be felt in the healing tissue; these usually soften with time.
- Numbness or altered sensation: temporary reduced sensation or tingling in the skin can occur.
- Bruising: bruises in the treated area usually fade within a few weeks.
Rippling in this period is often caused by uneven distribution of swelling and does not reflect the final result.
How does the tissue settle?
In the treated area, the tissue takes shape over months as swelling resolves and the skin adapts to the new volume. Skin elasticity is an important factor: skin with good elasticity adapts more easily to new contours, while less elastic skin may settle to a more limited extent. The final result usually takes several months to settle and varies from person to person.
General tips that support recovery
- wearing a compression garment for as long as your surgeon advises,
- supporting circulation with short walks from the first days,
- adequate fluid intake and a balanced diet,
- massage or lymphatic drainage only when recommended by your surgeon and at the right time.
When should you contact your surgeon?
Contact your surgeon without delay if you notice one-sided and increasing swelling, redness, warmth, fever, discharge or worsening pain. Irregularities that still look marked after several months are assessed at a follow-up visit, and correction options are discussed individually if needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is rippling after liposuction permanent?
Rippling in the first weeks is often related to swelling and decreases over time. If a clear irregularity remains after several months, it should be assessed by your surgeon.
When do firm areas soften?
Firmness usually decreases gradually over weeks to months; the timeline depends on the size of the treated area and individual healing.
Does a compression garment prevent irregularities?
A compression garment can help control swelling and help the tissue adapt to its new shape, but it cannot be said to prevent all irregularities on its own. The duration is set by your surgeon.
